The European Commission is preparing new legal measures to enable European Union countries to respond more quickly to sudden and mass migrant arrivals.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing sources, that Politico published the information.

According to the sources, the new initiatives could include the coordinated return of certain groups of migrants.

The publication reported that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen may outline the plans on September 16 during her annual address on the state of the European Union.

Von der Leyen referred to the idea of group deportations during a lunch with EU ambassadors last week.

A Politico source said the proposal was generally received positively by the participants.

According to the report, the European Commission will also issue legal guidance on situations in which EU countries could suspend the processing of asylum applications in certain cases and under specific circumstances.

The proposed measures come amid broader EU efforts to manage irregular migration, strengthen the bloc’s external borders and coordinate asylum procedures among member states. Any changes would have to comply with EU law and international obligations, including the principle of non-refoulement.
