Violent clashes have erupted in the Pakistan-administered Kashmir region during the initial phase of legislative elections, resulting in at least 20 fatalities.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing international media, that the violence broke out during the voting process.
According to reports, the confrontations occurred between police forces and supporters of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC). The protesters alleged that the elections were being rigged and accused the Pakistani federal government of interfering in the process to ensure the victory of loyalist candidates. During the unrest, law enforcement officials reportedly opened fire on the demonstrators.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has strongly criticized the holding of elections in the Pakistan-administered territory. Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the election campaign is an attempt by Pakistan to mask its illegal occupation of the region and conceal ongoing human rights violations. He further asserted that Pakistan continues to illegally and forcibly occupy territories in Kashmir, which India considers an integral part of its sovereign territory.
The Kashmir region has been a focal point of geopolitical tension between India and Pakistan for decades. Both nations claim the territory in its entirety, leading to multiple conflicts and a long-standing dispute over the region's status, which remains one of the most sensitive issues in South Asian international relations.
