BRICS leaders have called for “maximum restraint” over the ongoing war in the Middle East, stressing the importance of avoiding steps that could further escalate tensions.
Members unanimously adopted a joint statement on Saturday, the first day of the organization’s annual summit. The New Delhi Declaration expressed “deep concern” over the sustained escalation of tensions in the region.
The declaration called for a multilateral approach to resolving the crisis and stressed the importance of respecting the different positions of member countries. It reaffirmed the members’ commitment to resolving international disputes through dialogue, consultations and diplomacy.
The statement was adopted as the United States and Iran resumed strikes against each other after a pause in hostilities during much of August. The conflict in the Middle East has consequently returned to the center of international diplomacy.
The issue has posed a particular challenge for India, the summit’s host. BRICS includes Iran, which is directly involved in the conflict, as well as the United Arab Emirates, a close US ally. Despite their differing positions, members agreed on a joint statement calling for restraint and a diplomatic approach.
BRICS criticizes trade barriers
The declaration also expressed concern over growing “unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures.” BRICS said such measures distort trade.
The remarks came amid US sanctions against Iran and Russia. Washington has imposed extensive sanctions on Tehran in connection with the US-Iran conflict and on Russia over the war in Ukraine.
BRICS comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates. In recent years, the organization has expanded beyond its original members and sought to present itself as a voice for countries outside the traditional Western-led order.
