Poland’s conservative opposition said Saturday it would seek to oust Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s government through a parliamentary no-confidence motion, as a constitutional crisis deepened. Anadolu Agency reported the move.

Former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said the opposition was submitting the motion and proposed replacing the government with a temporary administration led by former Parliament Speaker Marek Jurek.

“We are submitting a motion of no confidence in Donald Tusk’s government,” Morawiecki wrote on the social media platform “X”. He said the proposed technical government would remain in place until elections determine a new parliamentary majority.

The move escalated a confrontation over Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal. President Karol Nawrocki described the dispute as a “violation of the constitutional order” and a “forcible takeover of a constitutional state body”.

Nawrocki cut short a trip to Senegal and returned to Warsaw overnight. On Saturday, he called urgent consultations with parliamentary parties, citing what he described as a threat to Poland’s internal security.

The crisis began after Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska suspended Tribunal head Bogdan Swieczkowski and took control of the institution. Swieczkowski and the opposition Law and Justice party, known as PiS, rejected the move as illegal.

Tusk’s government says it is acting to restore the rule of law after judicial changes made during PiS’s eight years in power, which ended in 2023. The opposition accuses the government of seeking to take control of independent state institutions.
