Polish authorities have detained a person suspected of planning an attack on Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. Security services held a special meeting on Sunday after the incident.
Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński told state broadcaster TVP Info that the suspect, who is in his 60s, was detained in the Lower Silesia region in the south of the country. He said security services identified the suspect after a detailed analysis of material the person had posted online.
Jacek Dobrzyński, a spokesperson for the special services, said officials had received information about a possible attack and were treating the threat as “deadly serious.” He told journalists that the likelihood of the threats being carried out was high but gave no further details.
Karolina Gałecka, a spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior, said the Government Protection Bureau, which is responsible for protecting ministers, had sent police an email containing information about the possible attack.
In posts on the social media platform X, Tusk and Kosiniak-Kamysz thanked police for their “swift and decisive” response.
Security concerns in Poland
The threat comes amid ongoing security concerns in Poland, including violence in schools and risks related to the country’s proximity to Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Authorities are also investigating a wave of violence, including an incident at a school on Thursday that resulted in the death of a caretaker.
Although violent crime is relatively rare in Poland, political polarization has deepened, and senior politicians have faced threats before. In August, police detained a 23-year-old accused of calling for the killing of senior Polish politicians. In 2024, Tusk said he had received threats following an assassination attempt on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
Authorities have not released further information about the alleged plan to attack Tusk and Kosiniak-Kamysz.
