The women’s competition at the World Wrestling Championships in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, begins on October 27. Jalə Aliyeva, Birgul Soltanova and Ruzanna Mammadova will represent Azerbaijan. Aliyeva and Soltanova will compete on the opening day.
Opening day
Jalə Aliyeva, who competes in the 57kg weight class, will face Hungary’s Tamara Dollak in the qualification round. Both wrestlers have won bronze medals at European championships. Aliyeva achieved the result this year, while Dollak did so in 2022.
Birgul Soltanova, seeded eighth in the 65kg class, has a bye in the qualification round and will start in the round of 16. Her opponent will be determined by the result of an earlier bout. If Soltanova advances to the quarterfinals, she could face world No. 1 and top seed Alina Kasabiyeva of Russia. Kasabiyeva must first win her round-of-16 bout. She is the silver medallist at the 2025 World Championships and the 2026 European champion.
Soltanova and Kasabiyeva met in the semifinals of the European Championships in Tirana in April this year. The Russian wrestler won that bout 11-10.
Third Azerbaijani wrestler competes on October 29
Ruzanna Mammadova, who will compete in the 59kg class, begins her campaign on October 29. Her first opponent will be Japan’s Natsuki Yamaguchi, who recently won bronze at the U23 World Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas. The women’s wrestling competition in Astana runs through October 30.
Azerbaijan’s team currently has two gold medals. Greco-Roman wrestlers Eldaniz Azizli (55kg) and Sanan Suleymanov (77kg) have become world champions.
