President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has addressed participants in the third high-level meeting of heads of anti-corruption authorities of member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held in Baku.

“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that Prosecutor General Kamran Aliyev delivered the address.

The address reads:

“I welcome you to the third high-level meeting of heads of anti-corruption authorities of member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held in Baku.

Azerbaijan attaches particular importance to developing cooperation within the OIC and strengthening solidarity and mutual support, and makes ongoing efforts in this regard.

Corruption is a crime that undermines public trust in state institutions and harms social justice, fair competition and economic development. In some cases, the cross-border nature of such crimes makes it necessary to take appropriate measures at both national and international levels. In this regard, the “Makkah Al-Mukarramah Convention on Law Enforcement Cooperation in Combating Corruption among OIC Member States” is a strategic document that establishes a unified legal platform in this field.

Azerbaijan’s accession to this Convention is of great importance for the development of international cooperation.

Azerbaijan is taking consistent measures to combat corruption. Improving legislation, increasing transparency and accountability in public administration, digitizing public services and ensuring their accessibility, and strengthening public oversight all play an important role in preventing corruption.

During the nearly 30 years of occupation of our lands, the illegal exploitation of our natural resources, including mineral deposits, with the involvement of foreign entities caused serious environmental damage to the region. Large sums of money obtained through these crimes were laundered through international financial channels.

Digital development, particularly the rapid spread of artificial intelligence, is expanding the opportunities to combat corruption while also creating new forms of corruption and enabling the abuse of digital financial instruments. The effective use by relevant law enforcement agencies of the potential of modern technological solutions is especially important in preventing and effectively investigating such crimes.

I am confident that the discussions in Baku and the proposals put forward will serve to further strengthen cooperation among OIC member states in combating corruption, reinforce trust and contribute to the sustainable development of our countries.

I wish you success in your meeting.”
