Azerbaijan plans to gradually replace cars with internal combustion engines with vehicles powered by alternative energy. The approved strategy sets initial steps by 2035 and aims to raise the share of electricity and other alternative energy sources in passenger cars to 100% by 2060.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports, citing AzTV, that the proposed changes could affect the car market, drivers’ choices and charging infrastructure.
How do drivers view the initiative?
Some drivers say they trust petrol-powered cars more and stress the importance of preserving freedom of choice. Others point to the environmental benefits of electric vehicles but note that conventional fuel-powered vehicles remain widely used. Some citizens have also expressed concerns about the possible effects of electric cars on human health. However, claims that electric vehicles pose a radiation hazard should not be treated as scientifically proven.
An expert commenting on the issue said the strategy’s approval does not mean that restrictions on the use of internal combustion engine cars will take effect tomorrow. The document sets long-term goals and, at the initial stage, envisages replacing vehicles — particularly those used for passenger transport — with cleaner alternatives.
The strategy also envisages incentive programmes to increase the use of electric vehicles.
Thus, the targets do not envisage an immediate ban on all petrol and diesel cars, but rather a long-term transition in the transport sector. Decisions on specific restrictions will be determined by the relevant legal documents and measures implemented by the state.
