German police have detained a suspect after a major fire at the Kehlsteinhaus, a mountain retreat used by senior Nazi officials, including Adolf Hitler, AnewZ reported. The historic building is also known as the Eagle’s Nest.

About 200 firefighters and emergency personnel were deployed after the fire broke out at the site near Berchtesgaden, Bavaria, on Friday. Footage from the scene showed flames and thick smoke rising from the mountaintop building as rescue workers tried to bring the blaze under control.

Police said the suspect was detained near the scene. Investigators are examining whether the person was connected to the fire. No information has been provided about a possible motive.

History of the Kehlsteinhaus

The Kehlsteinhaus was built in 1938 as a guest house for senior Nazi officials and their visitors.

The building, high in the Bavarian Alps, is separate from Hitler’s former summer residence, the Berghof, which was nearby.

After World War II, the Kehlsteinhaus was preserved as a historic site associated with Germany’s Nazi era.

The property is now owned by the state of Bavaria and has become a popular tourist destination.
