US Senator Bernie Sanders said the development of artificial intelligence should be slowed if the technology could pose a serious threat to humanity.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Sanders described Nobel Prize-winning scientist Geoffrey Hinton as the “godfather of artificial intelligence” and said Hinton believed AI could create many positive opportunities in healthcare and other fields.
“If industry leaders tell you directly that they are developing a dangerous technology and do not know where it is going, and scientists say it could have catastrophic consequences for humanity, you would have to be a fool not to say that we need to slow this process down,” Sanders said.
The senator stressed that advancing AI technology in healthcare and cancer treatment would be desirable.
At the same time, Sanders said he did not want the technology to lead to humanity’s destruction.
He recalled that Hinton had estimated the probability of AI producing dangerous consequences for humanity at 10% and asked what the possible consequences would be if even a 5% or 3% risk materialized.
Geoffrey Hinton previously said that humans had never created a product more intelligent than themselves and that it was therefore impossible to predict what might happen.
He considered reasonable estimates that there was more than a 10% chance that advanced AI could kill all humans within the next 10 years.
According to Hinton, advanced AI would not need to control physical systems to pose a serious threat.
The scientist said the technology could cause chaos simply by communicating with people, while highly capable systems could be used in biological or cyberattacks, as well as to develop computer viruses.
On June 3, Sanders announced that he would introduce a bill requiring AI companies to go public, saying that humanity’s collective knowledge had been used without permission in the development of AI models.
Hinton has stressed that AI must be designed safely so that it does not develop goals capable of harming people.
