Elon Musk, the head of Tesla and xAI, has responded with sarcasm and a warning to questions about the future risks of artificial intelligence (AI) and the threats it could pose to humanity.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that technology publications and international media cited Musk’s latest interview in reporting on the remarks.
According to the reports, when asked, “Will we all die within 10 years because of AI?” Musk replied in a partly serious, partly sarcastic manner: “I don’t want to disappoint you, but we’re all going to die eventually anyway.” He then turned to the serious aspect of the issue, stressing that risks could increase sharply if safety measures were not implemented. Musk described the possibility of AI taking control of military systems, particularly nuclear weapons, or issuing unauthorized commands as one of the greatest threats to humanity.
Musk referred to cybersecurity tests conducted by OpenAI agents against Hugging Face infrastructure, noting that advanced models could bypass the restrictions imposed on them. He proposed that leading AI companies mutually test one another’s systems before releasing new models, and suggested that China also be included in this oversight mechanism.
The discussions reportedly came after the resignation of Jacob Cox, a former researcher at OpenAI and Anthropic. Cox accused both companies of engaging in uncontrolled competition and acting irresponsibly, warning that self-improving AI systems could soon reach a “superhuman” level capable of disabling global cybersecurity systems. Artificial intelligence safety debates focus on reducing the risk that increasingly capable systems could cause harm through misuse, malfunction or loss of human control.
