US Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Mike Waltz made important statements on the geopolitical situation in the Middle East and reforms at the UN during an event organized by Al-Monitor in New York.

According to the reports, Waltz said Iran’s national currency had lost value to a record low and that the country’s economy was facing a deep crisis. The diplomat emphasized that, under the current conditions, Iran’s regime is going through its weakest period since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. He said Washington remained open to diplomatic talks with Tehran, but that time was working in the United States’ favor. Waltz also denied reports that Iran had demanded the lifting of sanctions and compensation as conditions for returning to negotiations.
Referring to the Abraham Accords, which seek to normalize relations between Israel and Arab states, the diplomat said additional countries were interested in joining the process.
Assessing the UN’s activities, Waltz noted that, at Washington’s initiative, the organization had undergone major budget cuts for the first time in its history. “We put the UN on a diet. For years, the budget only grew; now we are creating a leaner, more results-oriented organization,” he said.
The Abraham Accords were launched in 2020 with the aim of establishing and expanding diplomatic and economic ties between Israel and several Arab countries. The UN, founded in 1945, relies on member-state contributions to finance its operations and peacekeeping activities.
