Spain’s Sanchez calls for UN Security Council reform

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has called for strengthening the role of the United Nations (UN).

He stressed the need to reform the Security Council, including abolishing the veto power held by its five permanent members.

The Spanish prime minister said these steps could help renew and strengthen the multilateral system.

“We must double down on our commitment to the multilateral system. We must renew and strengthen it so that it can continue to play a central role in the 21st century, just as it did in the 20th century.

We must reform the Security Council, ensure fair representation for all regions of the world and abolish the veto power of the permanent members. Because, as stated in the UN Charter, no country, regardless of how powerful it may be, should simultaneously act as both judge and party to a dispute,” Sanchez said.

The UN Security Council is the body primarily responsible for maintaining international peace and security. It has 15 members, including five permanent members — China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States — that hold veto power, while the remaining 10 members are elected for two-year terms.
