"The United States expects progress toward a peaceful settlement of the situation in the Gaza Strip after the elections scheduled to be held in the Israeli parliament on October 27."
"Operative Information Center-OMM" reports that US Permanent Representative to the UN Mike Waltz made the remarks.
He said implementation of the peace plan proposed by Washington had slowed at this stage.
"The problems stem from disagreements over the sequence in which certain conditions should be fulfilled as part of the peace process between Israel and the radical Palestinian Hamas movement. In particular, this concerns the disarmament of Hamas units and the withdrawal of the Israeli army from Gaza. The United States hopes that, after the Knesset elections, the two sides will be able to resolve these disagreements with the participation of mediators," he said.
It was previously reported that representatives of 19 countries signed the charter of the Peace Council established to help resolve the situation in the Gaza Strip during the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 22. Washington said that other countries had also joined the organization.
The Gaza conflict and efforts to establish a lasting ceasefire have remained a major focus of international diplomacy. Mediators have sought to bridge differences over security arrangements, humanitarian access and the sequencing of commitments by the parties.
