The US State Department has approved a potential $2.7 billion military sale to Ukraine to improve its air defense capabilities, including related equipment and services.
The package includes missiles, air defense systems, launcher modifications and radars designed to counter drones. The deal must be reviewed by the US Congress before it can take effect.
If the deal goes ahead, Ukraine will finance the purchase with funds allocated by Europe and earmarked under the US Foreign Military Financing program during the administration of former President Joe Biden.
The decision was announced after US President Donald Trump signed into law new sanctions against Russia. The legislation increases economic pressure on Moscow.
According to Ukrainian authorities, at least eight people were killed and 33 wounded in Russian attacks on Ukraine’s Kharkiv, Donetsk and Kherson regions over the past 24 hours.
Five people were killed and 15 wounded after 15 settlements in Kharkiv region came under fire. One person was killed and 13 wounded in Donetsk region. In Kherson region, two people were killed and five wounded, while five apartment buildings and seven private houses were damaged.
A Russian guided bomb struck a nine-story residential building in Sumy. According to Sumy Mayor Artem Kobzar, two people were killed and eight wounded. This brought the number of people killed in Russian attacks on Ukraine over the past 24 hours to at least 10.
Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of obstructing talks on ending the war and interfering in parliamentary elections held in Russia. He also emphasized Russia’s defense policy based on its nuclear triad and the need to strengthen missile defense.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked US President Donald Trump for signing the sanctions legislation against Russia.
Potential foreign military sales approved by the US State Department are subject to congressional review and do not necessarily indicate that a contract has been finalized. Air defense has remained a central element of international military assistance to Ukraine amid continued missile and drone attacks.
