The US State Department has approved a potential $2.7 billion military sale to Ukraine to develop and upgrade its air defense capabilities, the department said in a notification sent to Congress late Friday.
The approved package includes missiles, air defense systems, modifications to launchers, counter-drone radars, as well as related equipment and services. The sale remains subject to congressional review.
If the agreement goes ahead, Ukraine will finance the purchase through European financial contributions and US Foreign Military Financing funds allocated during the administration of former President Joe Biden.
The US decision was announced after US President Donald Trump signed into law new sanctions against Russia. The legislation is aimed at increasing economic pressure on Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked US President Donald Trump for signing the law. He also expressed gratitude to members of Congress who supported its adoption.
Zelenskyy said the best way to honor the memory of the late Senator Lindsey Graham was to implement the law’s provisions fully and as quickly as possible.
US arms sales to Ukraine require congressional oversight, while foreign military financing is designed to help partner countries acquire US defense equipment and related services. Air defense has remained a key component of Ukraine’s military needs amid the ongoing war.
