US President Donald Trump said he expected a deal with Iran to be reached after the midterm elections in the United States.
Trump made the remarks during his address to the UN General Assembly. He said Iran might wait for the results of the elections scheduled for Nov. 3 before deciding on its next steps.
“A deal will be reached with Iran that will allow it to build a better country than it had before, or I will destroy the Islamic Republic,” Trump said in his speech.
Proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz
According to a senior Iranian official who spoke to Reuters, Tehran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States reduced military pressure and lifted its blockade of Iranian ports.
A report by Japan’s Kyodo news agency, citing an anonymous Iranian official, said the proposal had been conveyed to Washington through intermediaries and envisaged the resumption of talks aimed at ending military operations. The information has not been independently verified.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was reported to have ruled out a meeting with Donald Trump on the sidelines of this week’s UN General Assembly.
Signals of readiness to return to talks
Iran and the United States have signaled that they are ready to resume talks to end the conflict. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington was open to negotiations if there was a possibility of achieving a result.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi spoke by phone with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York. The sides discussed the General Assembly’s agenda and efforts to promote international peace and security.
Araghchi said Tehran would use the UN meeting to raise Iran’s position and what it described as the rights and interests of its people. He also emphasized that confidence in international organizations and international law was declining.
Regional impact of tensions in the Middle East
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman discussed the importance of keeping the Bab el-Mandeb and Strait of Hormuz open to shipping. According to the Kremlin, the leaders called for an early end to fighting in Yemen.
Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi also urged the United States and Iran to return to talks to reduce tensions. He stressed the importance of ensuring safe shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and thanked Pakistan for its mediation efforts.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called for additional naval and air forces to be deployed to protect commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
The UN has warned that up to another 100,000 people could be displaced in the next three months as fighting intensifies in Yemen. According to the organization, more than 130,000 people have already left their homes this month, while more than 3,000 have crossed the Red Sea to Africa.
Operations on Saudi Arabia’s East-West oil pipeline, suspended after drone attacks, have been partially restored. Meanwhile, the price of diesel in Belgium rose to a record 2.50 euros per liter.
