US President Donald Trump issued harsh threats against Iran’s leadership in a phone interview with Fox News. The US leader said Iran could be completely destroyed or driven into a severe economic collapse if Tehran does not accept Washington’s terms and sign a new agreement.

According to the report, Trump said Iran faced three main scenarios amid continuing tensions in the Middle East: reaching a new agreement, suffering complete economic collapse or having its political leadership eliminated. However, the US president also said he was open to meeting Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who is expected to travel to New York this week for the annual high-level session of the UN General Assembly.
Trump’s remarks came after Iran’s Armed Forces Central Command warned that retaliatory strikes would be carried out against the United States and its allies. The US State Department has issued a high-level security alert for Americans in the Middle East as military risks and uncertainty in the region’s airspace have sharply increased.
The UN General Assembly’s annual high-level session brings together world leaders to discuss international security, regional conflicts and other global issues. Meetings between senior officials on the sidelines of the session have often been used to explore diplomatic channels during periods of heightened tension.
