US President Donald Trump is prioritizing diplomacy with Tehran despite pressure from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to launch military strikes shortly after Tuesday’s US midterm elections, Anadolu Agency reported, citing Axios.
During a phone conversation on Saturday, Netanyahu urged Washington to resume military action against Iran soon after the vote, while Trump favored allowing diplomatic efforts to continue, according to American and Israeli sources familiar with the exchange. The sources said Netanyahu was concerned about Trump’s approach.
An Israeli official described the discussion as “tough,” while a US source characterized it as “direct.”
Trump told reporters on Saturday that talks with Tehran were progressing well and said he was not “in much of a hurry” to resume strikes. In earlier remarks, however, he had suggested military action could resume after Nov. 3.
The exchange followed correspondence from US Vice President JD Vance to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, concerning the possible resumption of formal negotiations.
Meanwhile, Qatari mediators are holding discussions with Iranian representatives to broker a return to direct negotiations.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said an agreement remained pending answers from the US and that no agreement had been reached.
The White House and the Israeli prime minister’s office declined to comment on the report, according to Axios.
