US President Donald Trump addressed the Republican Party’s midterm election convention in Dallas on Wednesday, placing himself and the war with Iran at the center of the party’s campaign.
Trump urged his supporters to approach the November election as if his name were on the ballot. “We are fighting together. This is the most important election of your life,” the president said.
He promised that every adult in the United States would receive $5,000 if Republicans retain control of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Trump called the payment a “dividend,” but did not provide details on how it would be financed or implemented.
Trump claimed that the war with Iran would end immediately after the November election. He said Tehran was trying to prolong the conflict to influence voters: “I think the war will be over immediately after the election because they can’t take it anymore.”
The US president also repeated his threat to strike the fortified “Pickaxe Mountain” area near Iran’s damaged Natanz uranium-enrichment facility. “I would advise Iran not to play games, because we’re going to have to hit them very hard,” Trump said.
During his speech, Trump also joked about renaming the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait.” The number of vessels passing through the strategic waterway has declined amid the war. According to preliminary vessel-tracking data cited by Reuters, only seven ships passed through the strait on Wednesday.
Trump defended his decision to launch military operations, stressing that Iran would not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons. Addressing voters’ concerns about rising fuel prices, the president said: “Can Iran have a nuclear weapon? Absolutely not.”
Trump warned voters that they would face difficult times if Democrats win in November: “If they win, every bill will become a hostage negotiation. You will go through the hell we went through two years ago.”
The Dallas convention showed how closely the Republican Party is linking its midterm campaign to Trump’s personal political standing and the war with Iran. The elections will determine control of Congress, while Trump is presenting the 2026 midterms as a referendum on his domestic and foreign policies.
