A proposal has been made to establish TÜRKPOL, a new organization to combat transnational crime among the member states of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS).
Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Hürriyet, reports that Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi made the remarks to journalists following the third meeting of the OTS interior ministers in Astana.
According to him, the OTS member states supported the proposal.
“I believe that the establishment of TÜRKPOL in the future will further strengthen our cooperation and joint capabilities in combating cross-border crimes and criminals,” the Turkish minister said.
The proposed organization could be modeled on Interpol and the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol), it was noted.
The Organization of Turkic States brings together Turkic-speaking countries to expand cooperation in areas including security, trade, transport and culture. A coordinated police mechanism could facilitate the exchange of information and cooperation against crimes that cross national borders, subject to the relevant national laws of its member states.
