Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico intends to propose the establishment of a direct communication line between Russia and Ukraine at the upcoming European Council meeting this Thursday.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing the TASR news agency, the Slovak leader aims to address the current diplomatic impasse in the region.

During his recent statements, Prime Minister Fico expressed skepticism regarding the European Union's current diplomatic influence, asserting that the bloc has been unable to play a decisive role in facilitating peace negotiations for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The European Council summit in Brussels serves as a critical platform for EU member states to coordinate foreign policy and security strategies. Slovakia, a member of both the EU and NATO, has frequently advocated for a pragmatic approach to the conflict, emphasizing the necessity of diplomatic channels to prevent further escalation. The proposal for a direct communication line reflects Bratislava's ongoing efforts to encourage dialogue, although the initiative faces complex geopolitical challenges given the current positions of both Moscow and Kyiv.
