Mourinho plays down penalty awarded to Real Madrid

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho commented on the penalty awarded in the Spanish league match against Racing after his team’s game against AEK in the fourth round of the Champions League league phase. The Madrid club beat AEK 3-2 away.

“It did not even affect the score. If necessary, we would have scored more goals. I think it was an insignificant penalty. I would have been disappointed if it had been awarded against me. There have been errors in other matches that seriously affected the score. Those are the important mistakes, not this decision,” Marca quoted Mourinho as saying.

The Spanish league’s 11th-round match between Racing and Real Madrid, played on November 1, ended in a 3-0 win for the visitors. In the 10th minute, Kylian Mbappe fell inside the penalty area after contact with opposing player Matteo Prati. Referee Jose Munuera Montero immediately awarded a penalty, and VAR did not intervene. Mbappe converted the spot kick.

The Referees’ Technical Committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation confirmed that Montero’s decision was an “obvious and serious error.”
