Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has announced his resignation.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, Vučić said in his address announcing the resignation: “Today is the day I announce my resignation,” adding that he was addressing citizens for the last time as president of Serbia.
“Dear citizens, today is the day I announce my resignation, and as I address you for the last time as president of the Republic of Serbia, I will try not to burden you with figures,” Vučić said.
He said he would read part of his speech from a written text and deliver the rest based on his own thoughts.
“The moment of decision has arrived. History teaches us that progress is never achieved by chance. It is achieved through difficult choices, responsibility before one’s conscience and the determination to move forward,” the Serbian president said.
Referring in his speech to the words of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Vučić said that after remaining at the helm of a state for many years, progress rarely occurs at the desired pace and that governing means making difficult decisions and bearing responsibility for each one.
He also thanked citizens, saying they had placed their confidence in him twice, and spoke about a “new chapter” ahead for Serbia.
Vučić won the first round of Serbia’s 2017 presidential election with 55.08% of the vote. His second presidential term began in 2022 and was due to end normally in 2027.
Under Serbia’s Constitution, National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabić will exercise the powers of president.
The Constitution requires presidential elections to be held within three months of the date on which the head of state resigns.
Vučić said there would be more than a month between the conclusion of parliamentary elections and the announcement of the presidential election, because the election campaign would last for a shorter period.
Serbia’s presidency is a directly elected office, while the National Assembly plays a central role in organizing the transition following a presidential resignation. The constitutional timetable is intended to ensure that the office is filled through a new nationwide vote.
