The United States is ready for possible talks with an Iranian delegation on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the remarks in an interview with NBC News.
He said no specific meeting had been scheduled, but the United States was open to the possibility, particularly if it could produce a positive outcome and achieve the main objective of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
“The point is that Iran must not have nuclear weapons under any circumstances. It simply cannot have them,” Rubio said.
The UN General Assembly is an annual forum where world leaders and senior officials discuss international security, diplomacy and other global issues. Meetings between US and Iranian officials could therefore provide an opportunity to address Tehran’s nuclear program and broader regional tensions, although no formal talks have yet been announced.
