US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Ukraine’s membership in NATO is not currently under discussion.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that foreign media outlets have published the remarks.
“Ukraine’s NATO membership is not on the agenda at present, because such a decision can be made only with the unanimous agreement of all member states,” the US secretary of state said.
Rubio stressed that Washington is currently focused on bringing an end to the fighting between Russia and Ukraine.
He also said Washington is seeking to play a constructive role in efforts to resolve the conflict.
NATO decisions on admitting new members require consensus among all allies. The alliance has 32 member states.
