U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons and that any agreement meeting U.S. demands must guarantee Tehran will not obtain them.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports, citing foreign media.
“Iran cannot have nuclear weapons. It is simple and clear. I will not go into the details of what is acceptable and what is not. But I can say this: they will never have nuclear weapons, and any agreement that meets U.S. demands must guarantee that Iran will not have nuclear weapons. That is our position,” Rubio said.
The U.S. secretary of state added that Iran could present itself as a threat to the world in the future if it develops its military capabilities.
“That has been precisely their goal. President Donald Trump will never allow it,” he stressed.
According to Rubio, the Trump administration has dealt a serious blow to Iran’s drone program and production capabilities, as well as its missile capacity, navy and air force:
“Today, they are militarily much weaker than before. They will never have nuclear weapons while President Trump is in office. This is an unequivocal position for us.”
Rubio said Iran had previously had numerous opportunities to reach agreements on these issues, but Tehran had not taken advantage of them.
The U.S. secretary of state also addressed the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. He said the strait was open and that oil was being transported through it at a volume comparable to that before the conflict began.
“They have completely lost control of the strait and their own economy. Iran’s economy will face a crisis as severe as that faced by very few countries in the world. This is the result of decisions made by radicals who have brought the Iranian people to this point. Instead of directing funds toward the people’s welfare, they spend them on missiles. They also fund terrorism and weapons. Let us hope the situation changes,” Rubio said.
