More than 1,600 journalists have been killed worldwide over the past 20 years.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that the figure was included in a new UNESCO report.
UNESCO’s systematic monitoring, which began in 2006, has recorded the killings of 1,641 journalists worldwide. This amounts to an average of one journalist killed every four days.
Armed conflict was identified as the main cause of journalist deaths. Over the past two years, the number of journalist killings in countries without armed conflict fell to its lowest level in 18 years. A total of 62 journalists were killed in those countries during that period.
UNESCO also noted a decline in the number of female journalists killed. However, deaths among media workers aged 25 to 29 have increased.
