Criminal cases have been opened in Azerbaijan over attempts to evade military service.

The Military Prosecutor’s Office provided the information to “Operative Information Center-OMM”, Operative Information Center-OMM reports.

It said some citizens of conscription age try to avoid compulsory military service by feigning various illnesses, including mental and neurotic disorders through self-inflicted injuries, and even undergoing surgery without medical indications.

During the July and October conscription periods this year, the Military Prosecutor’s Office opened criminal cases under Article 321.1 of the Criminal Code in connection with five such incidents. Investigations are under way into conscripts registered with the Service’s Ganja city department, Imishli district division, and the district divisions in Gobustan and Shusha.

“We would like to inform citizens that, under Article 321.1 of the Criminal Code, ‘evasion of conscription’ means failing to appear without a valid reason for a medical examination (medical assessment), compulsory active military service, training assemblies or conscription for military service under mobilization. Such acts entail criminal liability,” the statement said.
