European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said a strike on a train near the Ukraine-Poland border was intended to frighten Western countries.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing Reuters, that Kallas made the remarks in response to the incident.
According to the report, Kallas stressed the importance of responding by moving in the opposite direction. “We must show that we support Ukraine and are not afraid,” she said. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot also said the strike was intended to intimidate Europeans and create divisions among them. Although both officials accused Russia of being responsible for the strikes, European officials provided no evidence of Moscow’s involvement in the incident.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said early on Sept. 13 that the Polish Armed Forces had detected several unmanned aerial vehicles near the Ukrainian border. One of the drones struck a train traveling on the Kyiv-Warsaw route, while another crashed near the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing.
The European Union’s foreign policy chief is responsible for coordinating the bloc’s common foreign and security policy and representing the EU in international affairs. The incident comes amid continuing security concerns along NATO’s eastern flank and heightened attention to drone activity near the borders of EU member states.
