Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has spoken about the decision that led to Cristiano Ronaldo leaving the national team. He said he would not change the steps he took as coach in that situation.
“I would change nothing, absolutely nothing. I made a coaching decision with my team in mind. I do not think I did anything that could have caused Ronaldo to leave the national team,” Jesus said.
The coach stressed that he did not feel guilty about anything and said he respected the player’s decision. Ronaldo has an important place in Portugal’s history and is a national symbol, Jesus said, adding that this cannot be ignored. He also said that a strong friendship had developed between them over the past year and a half. In sporting terms, Ronaldo made a different decision, and Jesus said he respected it. CNN Portugal published Jesus’ remarks.
In September, the coach did not bring the 41-year-old forward on as a substitute in a match against Norway. Cristiano Ronaldo then decided to end his international career. The player had earlier announced the decision in a post on his social media account.
