Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has announced that he has left the national team’s camp.
The 41-year-old forward said he made the decision after the head coach’s press conference and a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation.
“When the time is right, I will tell the Portuguese people the whole truth about the issues that led me to leave the national team. I have always served this team with all my strength. Now it is time to wish Portugal and all my teammates success,” Ronaldo wrote on social media.
Earlier, Portugal head coach Joze Joze said there was no conflict. Ronaldo remained on the substitutes’ bench and did not play in Portugal’s Nations League match against Norway.
According to the coach, the player said during a private conversation that he would accept any decision by the coaching staff regarding his participation in matches.
The Nations League is a UEFA competition featuring European national teams, with matches played during international windows. Portugal won the inaugural edition in 2019 and remains one of the tournament’s prominent sides.
