Iran’s army said on Friday that its air defense force shot down a US MQ-9 drone over Qeshm Island, Anadolu Agency reported.
The army’s public relations office said the drone was targeted and destroyed by “advanced systems” operating within the integrated air defense network, according to the Tasnim news agency.
The statement described the aircraft as belonging to the “invading American enemy” and called the US military a “terrorist army”.
The United States did not comment on the claim.
Qeshm, Iran’s largest island, is in the southern province of Hormozgan, near the northern approaches to the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway linking the Gulf with the Gulf of Oman.
Iran has repeatedly reported intercepting US drones over Qeshm and nearby waters amid military tensions with Washington. The tensions followed a US-Israeli offensive against Iran that began on Feb. 28 and remained unresolved despite a June memorandum for a comprehensive peace deal.
