Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has announced that an MQ-1 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was shot down over the Strait of Hormuz.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the Fars News Agency published the information.

According to the report, the UAV was detected and neutralized by Iran's air defense system.

The report said MQ-1 UAVs, produced by the United States in the 1990s, were initially designed for surveillance and reconnaissance missions. The aircraft were later equipped with upgraded cameras and missiles.

The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically important waterway linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. It is a major route for global energy shipments.
