Iran reportedly discussed the possibility of launching a missile strike against one of Ukraine's port cities in response to an incident in the Caspian Sea.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing a report by The New York Times which references Iranian and Western officials, the alleged targeting of an Iran-linked vessel by Ukraine on July 25 triggered a sharp reaction from Tehran.
Reports indicate that the Iranian leadership considered a limited missile strike on Ukrainian territory as a potential retaliatory measure. Sources claim the objective was not to cause large-scale destruction, but rather to send a "symbolic message" to Kyiv.
According to the information, Tehran planned to conduct a limited operation using a ballistic missile with a relatively small warhead. However, it is noted that the situation has currently stabilized due to diplomatic contacts and international pressure.
It should be noted that the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) had previously confirmed drone strikes on a Russian-owned oil platform in the Caspian Sea and on vessels reportedly used for Iran-Russia military cargo transportation.
Following the incident, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the attack, stating it would not go unanswered. Conversely, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha dismissed Iran's threats as baseless, alleging that Tehran is complicit in Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine.
The Caspian Sea has increasingly become a theater of strategic interest, serving as a critical logistics corridor for military and economic cooperation between Moscow and Tehran, which has drawn significant attention from international observers and regional powers.
