Former Barcelona and Real Madrid midfielder Luis Figo said Jose Mourinho could have been a suitable candidate to coach the Catalan club. Mourinho worked as an assistant coach at Barcelona from 1996 to 2000.
According to Figo, Mourinho’s candidacy was discussed before Pep Guardiola was appointed. At the time, Mourinho could have been considered to have the qualities needed to lead Barcelona.
Figo noted that although Mourinho had little experience when they worked together, his later achievements, abilities and knowledge could have made him a good coach for Barcelona. The former footballer said that if Mourinho returned to the club, he would know its philosophy and squad.
