The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has backed Gianni Infantino’s re-election as FIFA president. AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa announced the decision at an extraordinary meeting in Tokyo on October 23.
Al Khalifa said the organization had confirmed its support for Infantino and his leadership and would stand by him in his bid for another term as FIFA president. He acknowledged that the two sides had disagreed in the past but said those issues should be kept separate from the current support. According to Al Khalifa, a meeting in Zurich in recent days had shown that mutual understanding had been reached.
“We need to move forward. We believe football is stronger when we work together around a shared vision and goal. As one united Asian family, we are ready to move forward and support you, Gianni,” Al Khalifa said, according to football insider Ben Jacobs, who shared the remarks on his X account.
Infantino has also received backing from the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The two continental bodies have thus signaled their intention to support the current FIFA president in the upcoming election. The FIFA presidential election will be held in Morocco in March 2027. The deadline for nominations is November 18, 2026.
