According to The Times, former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger could challenge Gianni Infantino for the FIFA presidency. Discussions are under way to persuade Wenger, who currently heads FIFA’s global football development, to put himself forward as a candidate.
So far, only FIFA’s current president, Infantino, has announced that he will run in the election scheduled for March 18 next year. His potential rivals hope a strong challenger will emerge before the nomination period closes on November 18.
Jordanian Prince Ali bin al-Hussein may also run again. He challenged Infantino in 2016.
Victor Montagliani, president of CONCACAF and another potential candidate for the FIFA presidency, does not plan to run in the election.
