Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho has commented on the court investigation involving Barcelona and former vice-president of Spain’s Technical Committee of Referees José María Enríquez Negreira.
“If, in the end, nothing happens and nobody receives a real punishment, this will be the biggest scandal in the history of world refereeing,” Mourinho said, according to comments shared on social media by El Chiringuito TV.
The “Negreira case” came to light in the spring of 2023. Barcelona is accused of transferring more than 7 million euros to companies linked to Negreira, who was then vice-president of Spain’s referees committee, between 2001 and 2018.
Barcelona has said the payments were for consultancy services involving refereeing reports. Spain’s prosecution service is continuing its investigation into suspected corruption.
