The European Union will allocate 3.3 billion euros ($3.8 billion) to Ukraine to purchase missiles and drones.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made the announcement after a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. She said the payment would be transferred to Ukraine the following day.
Von der Leyen said the funds were being allocated amid Russia’s ongoing strikes on Kyiv. According to her, Russia is targeting Kyiv relentlessly and seeking to make daily life impossible for the city’s residents.
The funding is part of the 28.3 billion euros allocated by the EU for defense purposes this year under the Ukraine Defense Loan framework.
US President Donald Trump, meanwhile, said progress had been made toward establishing a US military base in Poland. He praised Polish President Karol Nawrocki’s “bold leadership” in advancing the initiative.
Trump said the location of the base would be announced soon if the project goes ahead. Nawrocki said Poland was ready to continue efforts to strengthen defense cooperation.
The European Union has provided extensive military and financial support to Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale war in 2022. Missile and drone supplies remain a central element of Ukraine’s air defense and strike capabilities, while European governments continue to coordinate assistance through joint funding and procurement mechanisms.
