The Embassy of Belgium in Baku has issued a strong condemnation of the drone strikes carried out by Iran against the territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic yesterday.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the diplomatic mission expressed its stance through a statement shared on its official X social media account.

"The Embassy expresses its full solidarity with Azerbaijan following the attacks on the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. We strongly condemn these attacks, which endanger civilians and violate Azerbaijan's sovereignty, as well as international law. We wish those injured a speedy recovery," the statement said.

On March 5, Iranian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) targeted several locations in Nakhchivan during the afternoon hours. One drone struck the terminal building of Nakhchivan International Airport, while a second fell near a school building in Shekarabad village. The attack on the airport resulted in injuries to four civilians. Following the incident, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Azerbaijan, Mojtaba Demirchilu, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Azerbaijani side stated that it reserves the right to launch a retaliatory strike in response to the provocation.

The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is an exclave of Azerbaijan, sharing borders with Armenia, Iran, and Türkiye. This escalation follows a period of heightened regional tensions and marks a significant violation of international norms regarding territorial integrity. Azerbaijan has consistently maintained that any threat to its sovereign borders will be met with appropriate measures in accordance with national interests and international legal frameworks.
