On March 5, Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili held a telephone conversation with the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, to discuss the recent security situation in the region.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM citing the MFA, the ministers focused on the situation resulting from drone attacks launched by Iran against Azerbaijan. Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov informed his colleague about the strikes carried out by the Iranian side on March 5 targeting the territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
The attacks resulted in damage to the terminal building of the Nakhchivan airport and caused injuries among civilians. Additionally, one of the drones landed near a school building in the village of Shekarabad. Minister Jeyhun Bayramov emphasized that this attack against the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan violates the norms and principles of international law and serves to escalate tensions in the region. It was noted that Azerbaijan demands a prompt clarification and explanation from Iran, as well as urgent measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili expressed her concern regarding the incident and underscored the vital importance of maintaining stability and security in the South Caucasus. During the conversation, the sides also exchanged views on other matters of mutual interest.
The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is an exclave of Azerbaijan, bordered by Armenia, Iran, and Türkiye. Given its strategic location, any military provocation in this area significantly impacts regional security dynamics. Azerbaijan has consistently called for the respect of its sovereign borders and the protection of civilian infrastructure in accordance with international mandates.
