On March 5, Georgia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Maka Botchorishvili initiated a telephone conversation with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov.

According to information provided by the MFA to Operative Information Center-OMM, the ministers discussed the situation arising from drone attacks launched by Iran against Azerbaijan. Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov informed his colleague about the drone strikes carried out by Iran on March 5 targeting the territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

As a result of the strikes, the terminal building of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic airport was damaged, and civilians sustained injuries. Additionally, one of the drones fell near a school building in the village of Shekarabad. Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov emphasized that this attack against the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan violates the norms and principles of international law and serves to increase tensions in the region. It was noted that the Azerbaijani side demands a prompt clarification and appropriate explanation from Iran regarding the attack, as well as the implementation of urgent measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili expressed her concern regarding the incident and highlighted the importance of maintaining stability and security in the region. During the phone call, the parties also exchanged views on other issues of mutual interest.

The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is a landlocked exclave of Azerbaijan, bordering Armenia, Iran, and Türkiye. Ensuring the security of this region is a priority for Baku, especially given its strategic geographical position. Azerbaijan and Georgia maintain a strategic partnership, frequently coordinating on regional security matters and large-scale energy and infrastructure projects that connect the Caspian Sea region with Europe.
