Kyrgyzstan is currently hosting the sixth edition of the World Nomad Games, a major international event dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage and traditional sports of nomadic peoples.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the event, which runs from August 31 to September 6, serves as a global platform to showcase the history and unique traditions of nomadic civilizations. The games, which first debuted in 2014, have returned to their birthplace in Kyrgyzstan this year.
Often described as the "Olympics of the nomadic world," the event extends beyond athletic competition. The program includes cultural exhibitions, scientific discussions, music, and traditional craftsmanship. The primary objective is to safeguard ancient customs and nomadic skills that face the risk of extinction due to rapid modernization. This year, approximately 3,000 participants from 112 countries are competing in 42 disciplines, including equestrian games, wrestling, archery, hunting traditions, strength competitions, and intellectual games.
The official opening ceremony took place at the newly commissioned Bishkek Arena stadium. The competitions are primarily centered around the Issyk-Kul lake region, including the city of Cholpon-Ata and the Kyrchyn Gorge. The Azerbaijani delegation is actively participating in the sporting, cultural, and scientific programs of the games, with a particular focus on traditional disciplines such as kok-boru, er enish, salbuurun, and "Toguz korgool."
The World Nomad Games hold significant international importance, as the 2026 edition is set to coincide with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Kyrgyzstan, further positioning the country as a key hub for diplomatic and cultural exchange.
