The Cabinet of Ministers has approved Azerbaijan’s Long-Term Low-Carbon Development Strategy.

“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that Prime Minister Ali Asadov signed a resolution on the matter.

Under the resolution, the Ministry of Economy must coordinate with relevant agencies to incorporate decarbonization measures for sectors of the national economy into state programs and strategies, national action plans and other documents, with the aim of achieving the strategy’s “net-zero emissions” target. The Ministry of Finance must ensure funding for the decarbonization measures.

The strategy states that achieving the conditional “net-zero emissions” target by 2060 will depend on securing additional financial resources, including through international cooperation and financial support, technology transfers, concessional loans and private-sector investment.

The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources must submit the strategy to the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. In coordination with relevant agencies, it must also inform the public about the strategy’s objectives and targets, promote it and arrange a public presentation involving scientific institutions and organizations and civil society groups. The ministry is to monitor implementation and submit the results to the State Commission on Climate Change every two years.
