Doctors have confirmed that Pope Leo XIV will not need further treatment after surgery to remove a nodule from his lung, Anadolu Agency reported, citing “Vatican News”.
In a written statement issued late Wednesday, the doctors said the removed tumor was a lung adenocarcinoma and the disease was localized.
“A subsequent oncological assessment has confirmed that no further treatment is necessary,” they said.
The pope underwent surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Oct. 13. The Vatican said the 90-minute operation was successful and that surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung using video-assisted surgery.
A histological examination confirmed lung adenocarcinoma. Pope Leo XIV was discharged on Saturday, and the Vatican had previously canceled his engagements through Oct. 20 to allow him to recover.
