Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, addressing an European Union summit, stated that Europe's future is inextricably linked to the defense of Ukraine, asserting that Kyiv's accelerated accession to the EU serves as the most reliable security guarantee for the bloc.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, citing international media reports, Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine is aiming to conclude the ongoing war with Russia by the end of this year.
During his address, the Ukrainian leader urged European nations to support Ukraine's preparations for the upcoming winter season. He highlighted the critical necessity of supplying Kyiv with additional air defense systems and fuel to maintain infrastructure resilience against potential strikes. Zelenskyy, in a statement shared on the X social media platform, noted that his country is paying a heavy price for its freedom and independence, arguing that Ukraine is more deserving of EU membership than any other candidate.
"The free, united, and peaceful future of Europe is defined by the defense of Ukraine. This demonstrates the exceptional nature of the situation we are facing," Zelenskyy stated.
Ukraine officially applied for European Union membership in February 2022, shortly after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion. In December 2023, the European Council decided to open accession negotiations with Ukraine, marking a significant milestone in the country's integration process into European political and economic structures.
