Yemen’s army said Sunday that its forces had “neutralized” nearly 500 Houthi fighters and field commanders during 1,272 operations over the previous 24 hours, according to Anadolu Agency.

Army spokesman Majed al-Nuzaili said the operations destroyed or damaged 169 vehicles, pieces of equipment and heavy weapons. He did not specify how many of those described as neutralized were killed or wounded.

In a statement on “X”, al-Nuzaili said the attacks targeted Houthi positions, reinforcements, fortifications, firing positions and supply routes as part of Operation Dawn of Yemen.

He said the operations supported ground advances and the recapture of positions on the Al-Jawf front in northern Yemen. Government forces were also continuing operations in Marib, Al-Bayda, Lahj and Taiz provinces, he added.

In Taiz, army troops and allied Popular Resistance fighters were battling the Houthis with support from warplanes, drones and artillery, al-Nuzaili said. He said forces were taking precautions to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.

Earlier, the army announced that it had shot down two Houthi drones and carried out airstrikes on the group’s positions in Al-Misrakh district, south of Taiz. The Interior Ministry separately said a Houthi drone strike on a home in western Taiz killed a woman and a girl and wounded another woman.

In al-Jawf, government forces said Saturday they had secured the strategic Huwayshian mountain range, which they described as a forward defensive line for al-Hazm, the provincial capital held by the Houthis.

Yemeni government forces launched Operation Dawn of Yemen on Oct. 5 to restore state institutions from Houthi control and retake the capital, Sanaa.

A military escalation between government forces and the Houthis resumed in July, killing and wounding thousands and displacing more than a quarter of a million people, according to UN reports. The escalation ended a period of relative calm that had prevailed in Yemen since April 2022, while the humanitarian crisis has worsened amid continued fighting and displacement.

Yemen has been at war since the Houthis seized Sanaa and several provinces in September 2014, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to intervene in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognized government.
