Iranian negotiators met Qatari mediators in Doha on Sunday, November 1, for a third consecutive day. Diplomatic efforts to end the US-Israeli war against Iran are continuing amid concerns that military operations could resume.
An official familiar with the talks told Reuters that discussions were focused on reaching a possible agreement to end the conflict and ease regional tensions. AnewZ reported this.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the talks had made progress, but no final agreement had been reached. He stressed that Tehran was prepared for both military confrontation and diplomatic engagement.
“We are doing everything we can in this process and hope the other side will act rationally and choose diplomacy over other options,” Araghchi said.
Araghchi also confirmed that discussions were continuing on a proposed two-day plan.
Proposal calls for Strait of Hormuz to reopen within two days
Iranian and Qatari representatives have prepared a proposal that could allow the Strait of Hormuz to reopen within two days after an agreement is reached with Washington, Araghchi said.
The strategic waterway is one of the main routes for global oil shipments. Ongoing disruption to traffic through the strait has increased pressure on energy markets and regional economies.
Iran has warned that new attacks could prompt strikes on US and Israeli targets in neighboring countries.
Military tensions remain high
The diplomatic initiative comes amid growing concern that the conflict could widen after the US midterm elections on November 3.
US President Donald Trump said Washington would not launch new attacks before the vote and described talks with Tehran as productive. However, he did not rule out military action after the election.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has ordered the armed forces to remain ready for a possible attack. In a post on October 31, he said any threat, at any level and of any kind, should be met with an immediate and effective response, without geographical limits.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Trump had not decided whether to launch new strikes and that the president preferred a diplomatic solution.
Qatari mediators traveled to Tehran on Friday, October 30, before moving the discussions to Doha. Contacts with Washington are also continuing as efforts to reach an agreement proceed.
