The administration of US President Donald Trump is preparing to impose broad sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) cited US officials and relevant documents in its coverage.
According to the report, the planned restrictions would ban most financial transactions involving the ICC after a six- to seven-month transition period. The sanctions could prevent the court from conducting transactions in US dollars, potentially cutting off its access to the global financial system and severely disrupting its operations.
Although it remains unclear when the final decision will be announced, it could be approved during the UN General Assembly or in the coming days.
Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized the ICC for issuing arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials over military operations in the Gaza Strip. He has also called on US allies to withdraw from the court’s jurisdiction.
The ICC is an independent international court based in The Hague that prosecutes individuals accused of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and aggression. The United States is not a party to the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the court.
